pomegranate - dilba ceren yasin

I’ve had the honour to work with Dilba Ceren Yasin on this passion project honouring the Middle-eastern diaspora.

Using the qualities and characteristics of a pomegranate, she created the link and metaphor between this rich fruit and the properties of the diaspora’s experience. A link only few can think of, let alone communicate to the public.

Combining power with vulnerability, we portrayed the diaspora as a damaged yet persistent entity. Honouring their legacy and celebrating their future. The pomegranate is a fruit worth the effort, just like the stories and western perspective on the middle-eastern diaspora.

The multiple layers, hidden beauty and richness is worth the effort of exploring the stereotypes and creating your own vision.

Imagine growing up, being told a pomegranate is too complicated, too much effort to handle or get to know. But if you take that extra minute, and carefully cut away the layers and separate the borders, an unchallenged beauty is revealed.

The fruit in my hands.

I’ve never had to peel a pomegranate.

My father always did, in silence and with patience.

Now the fruit is laying right in front of me, untouched.

And suddenly, I realise what love feels like when it doesn’t speak, but acts aloud.
